| News: Amsterdamned Floorball Cup - 2008 edition |
|
IFK returned from 2008 edition of Amsterdamned Floorball Cup with the mission accomplished to improve from last year place.
This year’s 13th place left the players slightly puzzled though: 3 wins, 2 losses and 1 draw, should certainly have rendered IFK a position higher up in the charts. Seeing also that Team Mannschaft (1-1 vs IFK) easily grabbed the 9th place added to the impression, later confirmed by the organizers, that IFK had a difficult group to qualify from. Bottom line, team headed back home with the impression of having done more than just improve one place.
By the way, what really needs to be improved is the pasta served by the restaurant in the Sport Halle. We know that “al dente” is not a Dutch word, but neither is “overcooked”, so why not learn both of them for next year!
Game résumés:
Game 1: IFK vs. VKTP 3-8 (0-6)
The Finns, who eventually finished 2nd in the group and 3rd overall, opened with a couple of quick goals which cushioned for a comfortable lead in half-time. IFK looked perplexed, disoriented and probably entered the match with too much respect. The ambition to regroup and win the second period was early met with 3 straight IFK goals, before the Finns finally could seal the game.
Game 2: IFK vs. Stimulu Denderleuw 2-1 (2-0)
The over-stimulated Belgians (who will face P.U.C in the European cup), played a good positional game and looked more individually skilled than IFK. But the collective machine and a frenetic checking game gave IFK a 2-0 half time lead. Only with one minute left to play in the second , the lead eventually was cut in half but an equalizer was in fact never really close. A great team effort by IFK!
Game 3: IFK vs. Den Haag 0-4
The Dutch champions, who were to win the group and finish 6th overall, were at least a number too large for IFK. The number of goals was held down, thanks to a compact defense and solid goal tending. A last push with 5 minutes left was disappointingly interrupted by a 2+5 penalty for goalie charging - a penalty that indeed left long gazes from the IFK bench.
Game 4: IFK vs. Team Mannschaft 1-1
A tactically skilled and tough playing Swiss mannschaft claimed after the game that they had their worst game of the day. Is it a coincidence that IFK made its best game of the day? Although the Swiss put up a massive pressing, they either lacked efficiency on the few chances they had, or they were robbed by the IFK netminder Meynard. The latter arguably made the match of the tournament, crowned in the last minute with a hand-stretch, jaw-dropping save to keep the score 1-1. Instead IFK was given the best chances to get a go-ahead goal to make the 3rd place in the group: a resultless power play and then a last second penalty shot which was saved by the Mannschaft goalie.
Game 5: IFK vs. 4th Period 3-2 (1-1 FT, 2-1 a.p.s)
IFK entered the field – stiff, sore and still in bed - to make the worse period in the tournament. Not yet awake and with effortless attacks, it was the defenders that saved the day, also scoring the lone goal in regulation time. Two penalty rounds had to decide the winner, in which two stars shone in goalie Meynard (3 saves) and Oliver Laich (2 goals).
Game 6: IFK vs. AA All Stars 2-0
After the lame effort by the IFK attack in game 5, a few lines adjustments were made with good results. All three lines played well with buzzing around the opponents goal as well as covering the own end of the rink. The numbers were put on the board by a strong and efficient second line with wingers Dupuis and Mether (2 goals) centered by Olsson.
